A Loyola University Chicago student was attacked Thursday afternoon by two men who tried to take his cell phone.

The student was grabbed from behind and punched in the eye, but was able to break free and flee into his apartment.

The attack took place at 1:30 p.m. Thursday  at the corner of  Albion and Newgard Avenues, just blocks from the Lake Shore Campus in Rogers Park, according to Campus Safety.

Here is the Campus Safety Crime Alert for the incident:

Loyola Community,

The Department of Campus Safety is writing to alert you about a strong-armed robbery attempt that occurred on Thursday, April 18, around 1:30 p.m., near the 6600 block of Newgard Avenue.

The victim, a Loyola student, was walking west on Albion listening to his headphones when he noticed a male (offender #1) riding his bike behind him for about half a block. When he reached the corner of Albion and Newgard, a different unknown male (offender #2) was blocking the sidewalk. Offender #2 told the victim to give up his phone. After answering “no,” the victim was grabbed from behind by offender #1 while offender #2 punched him in the left eye and attempted to steal his phone. Fortunately, the victim was able to break free and run to his apartment courtyard. The offenders then fled in opposite directions, with one heading east and the other heading west.

Offender #1 was last seen riding a small boys bike and wearing a blue hoodie and light-colored jeans. He also had on a black face mask.

Offender #2 was last seen wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans.

Campus Safety is working closely with local authorities on this investigation. If anyone has information on the incident, please call Campus Safety at 773.508.6039 or the Chicago Police Department via 9-1-1. We also urge you to review the safety tips listed below.

  • When walking alone off campus, always stay alert and tuned into your surroundings
  • Please refrain from listening to headphones/earphones while out alone, as this minimizes your ability to hear an approaching threat and it also advertises to a would-be thief that you may have a desirable item to steal
  • If you see something you believe to be suspicious, immediately contact Campus Safety at 773.508.6039 or the Chicago Police Department via 9-1-1
