Edgewater, Rogers Park may hear “extremely loud” noises

Residents of Chicago’s Rogers Park and Edgewater neighborhoods may experience temporary electrical outages and “extremely loud” noises beginning Friday and through the weekend due to ongoing CTA Red Line renovation work, the local alderman is warning.

The CTA will close Farwell Avenue temporarily, from just west of the CTA viaduct to Wayne Avenue, beginning Friday morning. The street will re-open Monday, January 21, at 5 a.m.  During the construction, some nearby residents will experience brief interruptions in electricity service at approximately 1 p.m. Friday and again at approximately 11 a.m., Monday, Ald. Joe Moore warns.

The sheet piling work that will be performed this weekend will be “extremely loud,” Moore said.  As it will be performed during a continuous 24-hour-per-day period, from Friday morning until early Monday morning, the surrounding neighbors will be extremely inconvenienced, he said.

Here is a letter from Moore to residents:

Dear Neighbor,

I am writing to provide you an update on the CTA substation construction work that will take place this weekend.

As I indicated in an email yesterday, the CTA will close Farwell temporarily, from just west of the CTA viaduct to Wayne, beginning this Friday, January 18th, at 9 a.m. The street will re-open Monday, January 21st, at 5 a.m.  During the construction, some nearby residents will experience brief interruptions in electricity service at approximately 1 p.m. Friday, January 18th, and again at approximately 11 a.m., Monday, January 21st.

Since I sent the email, I have been advised by the CTA that the sheet piling work that will be performed this weekend will be extremely loud.  As it will be performed during a continuous 24-hour-per-day period, from Friday morning until early Monday morning, the surrounding neighbors will be extremely inconvenienced.

The CTA indicated to me that there is no way to avoid this inconvenience, but that this weekend’s work will be the loudest construction period during the entire substation project, and that construction noise of that volume will not be repeated.

Regarding the electrical service outages on Friday and Monday, ComEd has provided me with a list of the affected addresses.  They are as follows:
1300-40 W. Pratt 6738-54 N. Lakewood 1320-36 W. Columbia 6922 N. Lakewood 6810-34 N. Lakewood 6807-6811 N. Wayne 6900 block of N. Wayne (both sides) 1313-47 W. Morse 1405 W. Morse 1309 W. Lunt 1336-1342 W. Farwell 1323 – 27 W. Farwell
I understand the noise and electrical outages this weekend will be disruptive, but the result will be a new substation that will increase train speed and service reliability and reduce “slow zones” on the far north Red Line, which will benefit us for years to come.

Once again, if you have any questions, please contact my office at ward49@cityofchicago.org or the CTA directly through Jeff Wilson, the CTA’s Government and Community Relations Officer, at jwilson@transitchicago.com.

Sincerely,

Joe Moore
