Posted by loyolastudentdispatch on May 4, 2012

An elderly woman was killed Thursday evening after she was struck by an SUV in Rogers Park.

Here is the story from WGN Radio:

An 81-year-old woman died after she was hit by a Chevy Tahoe as she crossed Devon Avenue in the West Rogers Park neighborhood, officials said.

Tasoula Metropolos was struck in a crosswalk in the 2700 block of West Devon Avenue and taken to St. Francis Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:11 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.

The accident occurred near her home in the 6400 block of North Fairfield Avenue, a spokesman for the medical examiner’s office said.

The driver of the SUV, a 28-year-old Javier Mercado Jr., made a right turn from North Washtenaw Avenue onto westbound Devon when he heard screams and stopped his car, police said.

He found Metropolos under his SUV and called 911 immediately, police said. Mercado also lived nearby, on the 6400 block of North Washtenaw.

He was cited for negligent driving and hitting a pedestrian, and is expected in court on June 19, police said.
