A man suspected of being involved in a check-cashing scam at Loyola University Chicago has been apprehended, according to Campus Safety.
They suspect was arrested earlier this week after trying to pull the scam on a student, who alerted Campus Safety. No further details are available at this time from Campus Safety.
Campus Safety has been searching for a male (19 to 20 years old, medium-brown complexion with a stubble beard, and approximately 6 feet tall and 170 pounds) who recently approached three students in Centennial Forum Student Union (CFSU) with the same check-cashing scam. He was known to frequent Zip’s Lounge (in CFSU) and he had been seen shooting pool.
The man told students that he is just out of’ the military and that his wallet was stolen so he had no ID. He said he had a check from his bank, but with no ID he wasn’t able to get it cashed. He then asked students if they had an account at Chase and if they did, he walked with them to the ATM machine. The man then made the check out to the student, the student deposited the check in the ATM machine, and the student then took out money for the scammer. Unfortunately, the checks he was using were stolen and once the bank processed the ATM transaction days later, the checks were identified as fraudulent and the student’s account at Chase was temporarily frozen.
Three students have been scammed, losing $250, $100, and $180 respectively.
