The Loyola community will once again participate in Earth Hour, a global event taking place on Saturday evening.

People from around the world are being asked to switch off their non-essential lights at 8:30 p.m. for one hour on to send a  message about climate change and to show support for helping protect the Earth’s natural resources, climate, and the environment.

More than 4,100 cities in 87 countries on all seven continents are expected to partake in this annual event which began gaining publicity in 2007.

The World Wildlife Fund is in charge of organizing this event and several landmarks from around the globe are scheduled to participate. Lights in the Las Vegas Strip, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco, St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Big Ben and the House of Parliament in London, and several other locations are all showing their support for Earth Hour.

Loyola is planning on turning off the lights on Halas Field and Seal Earl Track, the parking structure’s main lighting, Damen Hall, Quinlan, Flanner, 1 E. Pearson, 25 E. Pearson, 26 E. Person, and Lewis Tower’s 1st floor lobby lights.
